About Albers Accreditation

Built from inside the work.

I’m Dan Albers, founder of Albers Accreditation. I started the practice after more than a decade working directly in law enforcement accreditation, policy, compliance, training review, and the systems that support them.

My accreditation work began in 2013 with the Columbus Division of Police. Since then, I have supported four CALEA reaccreditation cycles, worked extensively with Ohio Collaborative certification, and advised supervisors, command staff, executive staff, and senior leadership on accreditation, compliance, implementation, and risk.

Through SOAR and direct peer requests, I have also assisted dozens of agencies with CALEA mock assessments, both on-site and remotely.

Many accreditation programs were assigned, not designed.

Responsibility often lands with someone who then has to build the process around existing structures, competing duties, changing leadership, and whatever institutional knowledge already exists.

Over time, programs can become dependent on individual people. Documentation can fall behind. Policy and practice can drift. Processes can become harder to explain, transfer, and sustain.

I have seen those patterns across different agencies and programs. They are a large part of why Albers Accreditation exists.

Practitioner Experience

I am a Management Analyst II with the Columbus Division of Police, where my work centers on accreditation, policy review, and compliance.

That work includes standards interpretation, assessment preparation, compliance-file review, policy and training review, corrective-action coordination, and alignment among policy, practice, training, and documentation.

Much of my work involves helping leadership understand what an issue means, what risk it creates, what options exist, and what should happen next.

That work supports decision-making at multiple levels of the organization.

Mock Assessments and Cross-Functional Work

During mock assessments, I help accreditation teams identify gaps, test readiness, and prepare for formal assessment.

I have worked with programs at different stages of development, with different staffing, structures, strengths, and challenges.

My accreditation work also requires coordination across organizational boundaries, inside and outside the Division of Police. That includes executive and command staff, accreditation professionals, Human Resources and Civil Service, Information Technology, training, records, policy and legal stakeholders, operational units, subject-matter experts, and personnel from other law enforcement agencies.

I have particular working knowledge of Human Resources and Civil Service processes as they intersect with accreditation standards and compliance.

I have also participated with Ohio accreditation professionals and the Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services in the development, review, and revision of OCLEAP standards.

PowerDMS Experience

I have worked with PowerPolicy and PowerStandards since 2013, including extensive work as a PowerDMS Master Administrator in policy and standards management, standards mapping, accreditation workflows, and compliance documentation.

PowerDMS is one part of my accreditation work. That experience helps me recognize where technology can help and where a problem needs changes to policy, workflow, responsibilities, training, leadership, or organizational structure.

Why Albers Accreditation

Albers Accreditation is built on a simple idea: agencies should get more from accreditation than a successful assessment.

The practice exists to help agencies understand where a program stands, strengthen the people and systems responsible for it, and keep the program useful between assessments.

When an agency works with Albers Accreditation, it works with me directly.
